The BS EN ISO 9000:2026 Quality Management — Fundamentals and Vocabulary standard is the current British and European adoption of the international foundation standard for quality management concepts, principles, terminology, and Quality Management Systems (QMS).
Published by BSI and identical to EN ISO 9000:2026 and ISO 9000:2026, this standard provides the common language used throughout ISO quality management and quality management system standards. It is an essential reference for quality managers, auditors, consultants, trainers, operations teams, compliance professionals, supply-chain organizations, and anyone implementing or interpreting standards such as BS EN ISO 9001.
Unlike ISO 9001, which establishes requirements against which a QMS can be assessed and certified, BS EN ISO 9000 explains the fundamental concepts, quality management principles, and vocabulary that underpin those requirements. This distinction makes ISO 9000 particularly important for organizations that need consistent interpretation of terminology across departments, suppliers, auditors, customers, consultants, and certification activities.
The 2026 edition represents a substantial modernization of the previous 2015 edition. BSI confirms that the title has changed from “Quality management systems — Fundamentals and vocabulary” to “Quality management — Fundamentals and vocabulary”, reflecting a broader treatment of quality concepts beyond the management system alone.
The document has also been restructured. Fundamental concepts and principles have moved into Clause 4, and the fundamentals are now divided into Fundamental quality management concepts and Additional concepts relevant to quality management. This gives users a clearer structure for understanding both long-established quality principles and newer concepts affecting modern organizations.
The vocabulary has also been updated. New terms have been introduced and existing definitions revised to reflect developments across ISO/TC 176 standards since 2015. The standard organizes terminology around major areas including organizations, management, processes, systems, requirements, actions, results, data and information, customers, characteristics, determination, and auditing.
Another important improvement is the revision of the concept diagrams in Annex A. These diagrams illustrate relationships between defined terms and have been reorganized to make those relationships clearer. For quality professionals, auditors, trainers, and consultants, this can make it considerably easier to understand how ISO terminology fits together rather than treating definitions as isolated entries.
BS EN ISO 9000:2026 also provides guidance for developing a QMS using the fundamental concepts and principles of quality management. It supports organizations seeking sustained success, customers seeking confidence in suppliers, organizations managing supply-chain requirements, conformity-assessment activities, training providers, consultants, auditors, and developers of related standards.
The standard is applicable to organizations of any size, complexity, or business model. Its principles and terminology can support manufacturing, engineering, construction, healthcare, technology, professional services, government, education, logistics, and virtually any other sector where consistent quality management matters.
For organizations preparing for the next generation of ISO 9001, this edition is especially important. ISO states that the 2026 revision updates definitions, terminology, and concepts to align with the evolving ISO 9001 framework and with current business practices, technology, and stakeholder needs.
BSI also emphasizes practical benefits including better shared understanding, easier implementation of ISO quality standards, stronger evidence-based decision making, greater consistency between teams and auditors, improved training, and better support for conformity activities. In other words, this is the standard that helps ensure everyone arguing about “quality” is at least using the same definitions while doing it.
